Green Card: what is it?
The Green Card insurance policy is a compulsory motor third-party liability insurance policy for traveling abroad by car only. If its owner causes an accident in another country, the insurance company will compensate the victims instead of the driver. The principle of operation is the same as that of a regular "motor citizen," but it is valid in 47 countries.
There are some differences. Firstly, the rates for CTP may differ from one insurance company to another. But the prices for the Green Card in Ukraine are practically the same. They are set for all insurance companies and depend on the type of vehicle, region of travel, and duration of the trip. The minimum policy period is 15 days, the maximum is 1 year.
Secondly, when insuring a car under the Green Card, the amount of possible payment is not indicated. It varies from country to country and will be 100% in line with local requirements. So there is no need to worry.
Why is it important to take out a policy in advance?
It happens that motorists remember about insurance coverage only at the border checkpoint. Since the policy is a mandatory document, you have to urgently look for insurance sellers right on the spot. In a stressful situation, you can lose time, overpay, and even encounter a fake. The cost of a Green Card in Kyiv or any other city will definitely not be higher than at the border, but the purchase itself is much more reliable.
An urgent purchase has another unpleasant consequence: there is a risk of miscalculating the days of stay abroad. Then problems can arise when you return home, at the border of the country of departure: up to administrative liability and high fines. So, if you have planned the dates of your upcoming trip, it is better to take care of insurance in advance, and be sure to make a copy of it.
Why do I need a copy of my Green Card?
Consider it an important and useful life hack. If a driver gets into an accident abroad, he or she must give the victim and other participants a copy of his or her insurance. We strongly advise against handing over the original document in a foreign country: how can you cross the border and return home without it? This is another important argument in favor of a planned rather than an urgent purchase.
Can I apply for a policy online?
Starting from 01.09.2022, you can conclude an international motor third party liability insurance contract for owners of motor vehicles (operating exclusively outside Ukraine) in electronic form. This decision was made at the General Meeting of Full Members of MTIBU on 20.07.2022 (Minutes No. 284/2022).
