eulaw.academy, a free programme in European Union law for Ukrainian students, was presented at the Austrian Embassy in Ukraine. Among the participants were Daniel Röthlin, Deputy Head of Mission of the Austrian Embassy in Ukraine, Wiel Hoefnagels, Honorary President of the EU Law Academy, and representatives of the universities and programme partners. Classes started on 5 November.

EU accession requires professionals capable of implementing European legislation. “Ukraine needs people who can turn European integration from policy into practice,” Vsevolod Chentsov, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, said in a video message to the students.

The first intake includes 24 students: 11 from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, 5 from Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman and 8 from Sumy State University. Graduates will receive a certificate from the University for Continuing Education Krems (Austria), and the programme will conclude with a study trip to Brussels (Belgium) and The Hague (Netherlands). Academic partners also include Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland) and IE University in Madrid (Spain).

The programme was initiated by two lawyers and alumni of the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) who now serve as Honorary Presidents of the EU Law Academy: Michael Goldinger, a Founding Father of ELSA, and Wiel Hoefnagels. The programme is supported by the Austrian Ministry for European and International Affairs and private partners, including UNIQA Group, which has made a significant contribution to its funding. As a result, the first academic year is free of charge for students.

The organisers plan to develop the programme further, expanding its geography and content.
